Cuttack: The wife and daughter of a slain man from Niali Thursday threatened to immolate themselves at the office of the director general of police (DGP) April 30, if the security personnel failed to give them justice.
Rina Das, wife of the slain Narayan Das, and their daughter Mamuni lodged a complaint in this regard at the DGP’s grievances cell. They urged the police to arrest those involved in the murder at the earliest.
The mother-daughter duo also lodged a complaint regarding the murder with the inspector general of police (IGP). They claimed that Niali police has been shielding people involved in the murder.
“Police are yet to arrest the accused even though the Orissa High Court had given an order in this regard October 16 last year. We had raised the issue with the DGP and the IGP (central) twice but to no avail,” rued Rina. In their complaint to the DGP, the mother-daughter duo claimed that people involved in the murder are moving around freely. But police have been claiming that the accused are on the run, they alleged.
“Police have failed to seize the weapons used in the murder. Moreover, they are yet to record statements of the witnesses,” Rina claimed. A few miscreants had hacked Narayan, a resident of Sarakora village, to death when he was returning home March 4, 2017. Niali police had registered a case as per a complaint filed by the victim’s family.
Prakash Behera, one of the accused in the murder, had surrendered before the district superintendent of police (rural) September 8, last year. When contacted, IGP Soumendra Priyadarshi said he has asked Niali police to collect information on the accused and take steps to arrest them.
