Puri: In a bid to make the Jagannath Dham beggar-free, the Odisha Government has rehabilitated 400 beggars in front of the temple to shelter homes.
The district administration has made eight shelters homes in different parts of the district as accommodation purpose of the homeless beggars. Each shelter home has the capacity of 50 people. Apart from providing food and shelter facilities, the administration will take steps to bring the beggars to the mainstream society.
The social welfare officers with the help of NGOs would identify the loitering beggars, cured leprosy patients found begging in the streets, and mentally retarded and physically challenged persons found begging in the streets and put them in shelter homes.
Niladri Nilaya Yojana had been launched March 1, 2020 in order to make Puri a beggar-free city.
