Cuttack, June 14: In an attempt to make use of helmets mandatory for motorcyclists, the Commissionerate Police will enforce ‘no helmet, no petrol’ rule in the Millennium City July 1.
This was revealed at a meeting of petrol pump owners and Twin City police commissioner YB Khurania here Monday. A massive awareness programme will be launched June 20 before introduction of the rule.
“The ‘no helmet, no petrol’ rule will be enforced in the city July 1 to minimise loss of life and property in road mishaps,” Khurania said.
Notably, Cuttack will be the fourth city to implement ‘no helmet, no petrol’ norm after Rourkela, Bargarh and Bhubaneswar. Rourkela was the first city to implement the rule December 18 last year.
Presence of police at the petrol pumps is essential for effective implementation of the rule.
Violation of traffic rules cause rise in number of accidents. About 600 road mishaps were recorded in Bhubaneswar alone in which 175 people had died, sources said.
