Cuttack: In a major breakthrough, the Commissionerate Police (CP) arrested dreaded criminals Sushant Dhalasamanta and his brother Sushil, who were among the most wanted list of police, from their house in Pokhariput area in Bhubaneswar Friday.
A special squad of CP nabbed Dhalasamanta brothers early in the morning from their house in the Housing Board Colony in Pokhariput area.
After arresting the criminals, CP conducted raids at several places including their residences at Bhubaneswar and CDA Sector-6 area in Cuttack and seized three guns, 108 live bullets, Rs 2.6 crore, two luxury cars (OD O5L-3303 and OD 05R-9909), 13 cell phones, several bank passbooks, 15 ATM cards, one laptop, a duplicate driving licence, cheque books and several other documents.
Besides, the CP found a mini arsenal at their CDA Sector-6 residence and seized a carbine, four 9mm pistols, 27 bullets, one double barrel gun and four double barrel bullets.
The criminal duo was running illegal arms racket in their house and supplying weapons to criminals across the city, said police commissioner YB Khurania at a press conference.
The Dhalasamanta brothers were involved in several criminal activities including murder, dacoity, extortion, tender fixing and illegal arms trade.
At least 13 criminal cases have been pending against Sushant while Sushil has 11 cases. Their criminal network was spread in and outside the state.
The CP expedited the probe and further investigations and interrogations are underway, Khurania said.
According to sources, Cuttack Sadar SDJM court had directed the CP to begin a probe after Aditya Mallick of Thatari Sahi had lodged a complaint alleging Sushant and Sushil along with other criminals had kidnapped and subsequently killed his son, Dipu, January 2014.
Following the court’s direction, Chauliaganj police registered a case January 18 and began a probe.
A special squad was constituted by DCP Sanjeev Arora, ACP (zone 3) Pramod Rath, Magalabag inspector-in-charge Arun Kumar Swain, Choudwar IIC Rasmiranjan Mohapatra, Chauliaganj IIC Ajay Kumar Das and Purighat IIC Tapas Chandra Pradhan.
The team conducted raids and arrested the brother duo from Housing Board Colony at Pokhariput in the capital city. Sources said both the criminals had gained notoriety in 1993-94 and continued to be elusive.
The duo hail from Haldiagada village in Khurda district and were involved in tender-fixing.
“We will seek the help of income tax department to gather information about the cash seized from the criminals. We will take them on remand for further interrogation. If necessary, they will be booked under National Security Act,” Khurania added. PNN
