Bhubaneswar: A two-day workshop on numismatic organised by the Odisha State Museum opened in the city Thursday.
Numismatic specialist Mahesh Kalra from Mumbai was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the workshop. In his address, Kalra said, “It’s a great pleasure to see so many students and scholars participating in the workshop as numismatic is only 150 years old in India. It is also a pleasure to give the audience a clear knowledge about it from my own research”.
State Museum superintendent Jayanti Ratha said, “Indian coins have a long and varied history that offers a clear insight of numismatic in the country. It’s our pleasure to have a reputed master like Kalra amidst us today”.
At the workshop, Kalra presented an insight into the inception of numismatic and how it is actually helping us to value our past. Students of Utkal University and Ravenshaw University along with many other scholars attended the workshop.
Jeevan Patnaik of state Archaeological Department, Susant Pradhan, Sarat Rath and Anam Behera were among the prominent personalities present at the event. Bharati Pal was the curator of the event.

Paper filigree workshop
Bhubaneswar: A two-day workshop on paper filigree was also inaugurated at the museum Thursday. Eighty-five students from various schools participated in the workshop to learn this amazing art. Subha Kumari Pati organised the workshop where children were tained in making cards, hair-bands, backside hair clips, wall hangings, 3D miniatures, dolls and much more.
Interacting with Orissa POST, Pati said, “This craft was introduced by Likan Patra and Sujit Bose and as a student of Patra it is my duty to popularise this craft. My solo moto is to make children stay away from gadgets like mobile phones, computers and TV and to help them become creative. This art form involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to create decorative designs”.
On the eve of International Museum Day Friday, five top collectors will showcase their collection at the Odisha State Museum. These philatelists are Arabinda Ray (British India coin collection), Shasanka Sekhar Das (newspaper collection), Tarinisen Patnaik (matchbox collection), Bibhuti Bhusan Patnaik (railway ticket collection) and Rajkishore Mohanty (compilation of Sachin Tendulkar’s century date and notes on it).
