Khurda: While the whole nation was busy celebrating Republic Day, Saturday, an Odia jawan attained martyrdom foiling a terrorist attack in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. The jawan has been identified as Hemant Kumar Panda (24), the only son of Pabitra Mohan Panda of Atharanga village of Botalama panchayat under Begunia block in Khurda district.
A gun battle took place Saturday between security personnel and terrorists in Baramulla during which a couple of terrorists were also killed. During the exchange of fire, Hemant was shot. The injured soldier was immediately rushed to the hospital, but he succumbed while undergoing treatment.
Hemant had joined the Army three years ago and his first posting was in Rajasthan. Before going to Jammu and Kashmir, he had visited his village three months ago for a holiday. As soon as news of Hemant’s untimely demise spread a pall of gloom descended on the village.
