Bhubaneswar: A special bomb disposal squad Friday disposed of some materials, suspected to be explosives, that were found in the general coach of Konark Express at Bhubaneswar railway station.
Reportedly, Konark Express train had reached Bhubaneswar from Mumbai and was stationed at platform No 2. According to a source, when a cleaning staff was cleaning the train at around 3 AM at night, he noticed smoke and heard some sounds from one of the coaches. He informed the authorities about the incident.
Subsequently, police reached the spot with sniffer dogs and seized eight red parachute signal rockets, 15 rocket parachute flares and a pathfinder sorter. According to primary reports, these substances are used to give long-range distress signalling in the sea by ships.
A police officer stated that carrying these substances on trains is not allowed. Following the discovery, security was tightened at Bhubaneswar railway station. A case has been registered by Railway Protection Force (RPF) in this regard.
The officer further informed that whether these materials are explosives or not will be known after the investigation.
Police are scanning CCTV footage and a detailed investigation into the matter is underway.
