Sundargarh: A vigilance court in Odisha’s Sundargarh district Wednesday sentenced a retired junior engineer to two years of rigorous imprisonment for embezzling government funds meant for labourers under a welfare scheme.
The convict, Anup Kumar Das, was found guilty of misappropriating public money during his tenure by inflating work records related to pond excavation under the Employment Assurance Scheme (EAS). Investigations revealed that he forged signatures and left thumb impressions of beneficiaries on muster rolls to siphon off funds.
The former JE Anup Kumar Das, who has in the meanwhile retired from service, was charge sheeted by Odisha Vigilance for misappropriating government fund by showing excess work towards excavation of pond under Employment Assurance Scheme (EAS), and forging the signatures and left thumb impressions of the labourers on the muster rolls, said a statement issued by the Vigilance.
The Special Judge, Vigilance, Sundargarh found him guilty of corruption charges and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 2 years, it further stated. Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of the convict following his conviction, it concluded.
