Bhubaneswar: Odisha government is planning to set up Social Security Infrastructure Complex in every district at a cost of Rs 27 crore each.
Addressing a function organized by the SSEPD department to observe the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Tuesday, state SSEPD Minister Prafulla Samal said the social security infrastructure complexes will act as Old Age Homes.
Samal stressed the need for specialised geriatric sections in all general hospitals of the state to cater to the needs of elderly. SSEPD Department should see that senior citizen related schemes and policies are implemented properly and stringent action would be taken against the perpetrators of elder abuse.
SSEPD Secretary Niten Chandra, said Social Security Infrastructure Complexes are already opeational in Kandhamal, Sambalpur, Puri, Jatani (Khurdha), Ganjam, Nabarangpur and Bhadrak districts.
He said Wellness Centre for Senior Citizens are being built at BMC Mall in Bhubaneswar. HELPAGE India state head Bharati Chakra, quoting a study “Elder Abuse in India Report -2018”, conducted by Help Age India said elders are being abused and the main abusers are the sons.
She mentioned with advancement of technology, elders are feeling lonely and disrespected, while the youngsters are busy with their mobile phones even at home.
