Bhubaneswar: The heatwave which had hit Odisha from mid-April is set to return again Tuesday onwards for three days, the regional office of the IMD informed Monday here. However, it also added that there will be relief from May 25 as there will be rainfall in many districts. The rainfall will be accompanied by gusty winds.

The IMD said that heatwave conditions will prevail in a number of districts for the next three days. Among them are the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Temperatures are expected to rise by two to four degrees Celsius than the normal temperatures at these places.

The IMD also said that heavy rainfall may disrupt the third phase of polls in Odisha May 25. Elections will be held for the Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Puri and Sambalpur Lok Sabha constituencies along with 42 Assembly seats under them. It added heavy rains are expected in the districts of Keonjhar, Sambalpur and Puri.

The IMD also informed that there will be light to moderate rainfall in a number of districts of the state from May 25 to May 28.

Meanwhile, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has cautioned fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal (BoB) from May 23 and asked those in sea to return to coast before the period as a low-pressure area is likely to form over southwest BoB around Wednesday.

In a letter to the Collectors of Ganjam, Puri, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Balasore as well as the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development department, SRC Satyabrata Sahu said that the IMD has intimated that in association with likely depression over BoB, a low-pressure area is likely to form over southwest BoB around May 22. It is likely to move initially northeastwards and concentrate into a depression over central BoB by the morning of May 24.

The SRC said under its influence, squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over central BoB from the morning of May 23.

“It would extend to adjoining areas of north BoB from May 24 with increase in wind speed of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph. Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough over central BoB from May 23 and over north BoB from May 24 onwards,” he said.

In this connection, the fishermen are advised not to venture into sea from May 23 onwards. Also, fishermen who were out at sea are advised to return to the coast before May 23.

“It is, therefore, requested to ensure the above advisory among the fishermen at your level,” the SRC letter said.
