Odisha weather: IMD forecasts low pressure area in Bay of Bengal, flags Orange Warning for heavy rainfall

Bhubaneswar: Under the influence of cyclonic circulation which persists over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood, a low-pressure area is likely to form over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours, the regional centre of IMD in its weather update said Monday.

The weather agency further issues Orange and Yellow Warnings for heavy rainfall over several districts of the state.

Upto 8.30 AM of September 5: As per the Orange Warning (be updated), heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Boudh, Kandhamal and Angul districts.

IMD further issued a Yellow Warning (be updated) that forecast heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Subarnapur, Koraput and Malkangiri districts. The weather agency also predicted that thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Odisha.

In the same timeframe, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of the state.

From 8.30 AM of September 5 to 8.30 AM of September 6:  As per the Orange Warning (be updated), heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur districts.

IMD further issued a Yellow Warning (ber updated) that forecast heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Rayagada, Kandhamal, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Subarnapur and Sambalpur districts.

In the same timeframe, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Odisha.

The weather agency suggested the following impact and action for the Orange Warning:

  1. Temporarily water logging is likely in low-lying areas.
  2. Poor visibility during intense spells of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas are likely. Traffic advisory may be issued for movement.
  3. Possibility of inundation of low-lying agricultural fields. Keep arrangements for drainage of excess water.
  4. Postpone fertilizer/chemicals application in agricultural fields and keep livestock/domestic animals in safe place.

In Bhubaneswar, for the next 24 hours, rain or thundershower is likely to occur towards afternoon or evening, the IMD predicted. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 32 degree Celsius and 24 degree Celsius respectively.

In the last 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature of 35.8 degree Celsius was recorded at Jagatsinghpur while the lowest minimum temperature of 21.0 degree Celsius was recorded at Phulbani, the bulletin informed.
