Odisha weather May 18: These districts are likely to turn into virtual cauldron over next five days

Bhubaneswar: The temperature in some districts of Odisha is likely to shoot past 42 degree Celsius mark, the regional centre of IMD in Bhubaneswar Thursday said.

No large change in maximum temperature (day temperature) is expected at most places of the state over the next five days. The temperatures in some districts of interior Odisha such as Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Subarnapur, Bargarh, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Jharsuguda and Nuapada are likely to be around 42 degree Celcius or more, said the weather agency.

Consequently, hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail. People are advised to take precautionary measures while going outside during day time between 11am to 3pm.

The weather agency further issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorm and lightning for several districts of the state.

Upto 8.30 AM of May 19: As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Khurda, Gajapati and Ganjam districts. Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Nayagarh and Kandhamal districts, the IMD bulletin stated.

In the same time frame, light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of coastal Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal and at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur. Dry weather is very likely to prevail over the remaining districts of the state.

From 8.30 AM of May 19 to 8.30 AM of May 20:  As per the Yellow Warning (be prepared), thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over Gajapati, Ganjam, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts.

In the same timeframe, light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of coastal Odisha, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur. Dry weather is very likely to prevail over the remaining districts of the state.

In Bhubaneswar, for the next 24 hours, a partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershower is predicted by IMD. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 38 degree Celsius and 25 degree Celsius respectively.

In the last 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature of 44.1 degree Celsius was recorded at Sonepur and Angul while the lowest minimum temperature of 22.0 degree Celsius was recorded at Nayagarh, the bulletin informed.
