Cuttack: The Orissa Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has served notice on the Vice-Chancellor of Ravenshaw University on a petition pertaining to the sine die closure of the institute May 8.
Aarati Meher, an undergraduate student of the university, had petitioned the OHRC seeking its intervention in the issue.
The petitioner had claimed that Ravenshaw authorities have decided to hike various fees from the upcoming academic year without arranging adequate teaching staff and other infrastructure. She had alleged that the university authorities have promoted commercialisation of education by introducing quite a few self-financing courses.
The university authorities have raised the number of seats in several departments including physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, psychology, economics and commerce to enroll students against payment of donations, claimed the petition.
According to the petitioner, Ravenshaw authorities had closed the university sine die when hundreds of students were on a peaceful dharna to protest the fee hike.
The petitioner has termed the sine die closure as illegal and claimed that it violated the human rights of Ravenshaw students.
