Paradip: One person was killed and five others injured in a firecracker explosion at a house in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district Thursday, police said.
The incident took place at Chandpur Mahila village within Tirtol police station limits.
The deceased has been identified as Manoranjan Swain.
His son Soumya Sahil, wife Laxmi and their tenant Rahul Raj Mahant were among the five people who sustained burn injuries, police said.
“Two of the five injured persons were shifted to SCB Medical College Hospital in Kataka for treatment,” police said, adding that three other injured persons were under treatment at the district headquarters hospital in Jagatsinghpur.
Tirtol Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ajay Kumar Das said preliminary reports suggested that Swain had stored a large quantity of firecrackers at his house.
He supplied firecrackers and music systems to marriage parties in the locality, the SDPO said.
Police were yet to ascertain the cause of the explosion.
A scientific team has been engaged in the investigation to determine the exact cause of the blast, and whether the firecrackers were being stored or manufactured illegally, police said.
