Bhubaneswar, Dec 13: Only women can check the rising trend of atrocities against women across the country, Union minority affairs minister Najma Heptulla said Saturday while expressing concern over the issue.
“Atrocities against women are less in cities than in other places, but uneducated people who live in rural areas are still torturing women. The main reason behind this is that after consuming alcohol men forget their relationship with women and violate their rights,” said the Union minister who addressed the national convention on women empowerment and child rights state progressive women’s forum here.
The minister advised that women, who bear the responsibility of their families, take concrete steps to change the mindset of men. Education is the key to this end, she said.
“Please educate your daughters and sisters so that their entire family can become educated. It will also help them protect their rights,” Heptulla advised.
She also urged Union tribal affairs minister Jual Oram, who was also present at the function, to provide security guard training to girls.
“If the girls get trained as security guards, they can not only protect themselves but can also provide security to women in places such as girls’ hostels and women’s wards in hospitals,” she said.
The minority affairs minister also met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat here and discussed the recent issue of alleged conversion in Uttar Pradesh.
Heptulla, who reached the Orissa capital on a special flight, went straight to Utkal Bipanna Sahayata Samiti (UBSS) to meet RSS chief Bhagwat. Her meeting with the RSS chief is significant in the backdrop of the issue of alleged conversion of Muslims in Agra with the issue rocking Lok Sabha.
