Sambalpur: Orissa batsmen failed to impress on the opening day of their U-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh and the hosts were reduced to 223 for nine at stumps at the VSS Stadium here, Thursday.
Sarbeswar Mohanty (47 batting, 84b, 4×4, 3×6) and Pappu Roy (one batting) were at the crease when the umpires called it the day.
Earlier, Orissa skipper Devendra Kunwar opted to bat first after winning the toss. Orissa lost opener Rajesh Dhupar (one) in the third over before losing Debasish Samantray and Biswajit Bhuyan (both scored nine) and were tottering at 59 for three.
However, the Amrit Khatua (59, 173b, 10×4) and Kunwar (41, 75b, 7×4) added 69 runs for the fourth wicket to resurrect the innings to some extent. Khatua was the man to be dismissed as the fourth wicket after completing his half century. Kunwar too followed his partner to the pavilion shortly.
Orissa then lost wickets at regular intervals while Sarbeswar stood tall. Mohsin Multan Khan (4/47) and Trishal Vijay Trivedi (3/28) were the standout bowlers for the visitors.
