Bhubaneswar: Punjab defeated hosts Orissa by an innings and one run in their under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy game at the Vikash ground here Wednesday.
Resuming at their overnight score of 70 for one and needing another 62 runs to make Punjab bat again, the hosts suffered a dramatic collapse and were bowled out for for 131.
Raghunath Malla (24), Krishna Palai (16) and Sanjay Das (18) were the only Orissa batters to offer some resistance as Rishab Bhagat (5/63) and Mayank Markande (4/20) ran through the order. Rishab, thus finished the match with 12 wickets after having dismissed seven Orissa batsmen in the first
innings.
Brief scores: Orissa 142 and 131 (Rishab Bhagat 5/63, Mayank Markande 4/20) lost to Punjab 274 by one innings and one run.
MCC enter semis
Mukteswar Cricket Club (MCC) entered the semifinals of the Puspalata Garabadu Memorial Masters T-20 cricket tournament after beating Sahid Sporting by six runs at the Town Club Ground here Wednesday.
Opting to bat first, MCC scored 135 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs. Sukant Jena (36), Prasant Mohapatra (30) and Biswaranjan Nayak (32) batted well for MCC. Amarendra Biswal (2/22) bowled well for Sahid Sporting.
Chasing a target of 136, Sahid Sporting had a good start as they were cruising at 82 for the loss of two wickets in 12 overs. But they suffered a late collapse and were eventually bowled out for 129 in the allotted overs. Man of the match Ajit Biswal (3/29) turned out to be the wrecker-in-chief for MCC.
Young Veterans will meet Pioneer Gold, Thursday.
