Cuttack, May 12: Riding on hat-tricks by Anjali Barua (four goals) and Eva Panna, hosts Orissa drubbed Pondicherry 14-0 to emerge table toppers of Group B and qualify for the quarterfinals of the women’s Sub-junior National football tournament at the Barabati Stadium here Tuesday. In their first match the hosts had defeated Madhya Pradesh 7-0.
Anjali scored in the 48th, 49th, 50th and 52nd minutes while Eva scored in the 25th, 59th, 68th minutes. Banya Kabiraj and Ashrita got two goals each while the remaining three were scored by Subhadra Nayak, Sila Singh and Dipa Nayak
However, initially the Pondicherry eves fought hard to keep the Orissa attackers at bay. They conceded only two goals in the first session. However, in the second session, their defence completely broke down against the incessant raids. Quite a few players seemed out of breath and the Orissa players took full advantage of this.
Talking after the game, Orissa coach Gitanjali Khuntia praised the efforts of her wards. “Most of these players, like Anjali and Bannya are very promising players,” stated Gitanjali. “If they receive proper guidance many of them have the potential to play for India,” she added.
In another match at the same venue, Manipur hammered Kerala 21-1. In the other games at Satyabrata Stadium, Chandigarh pummeled Himachal Pradesh 6-0 while Jharkhand beat Delhi 5-0.
Subrat qualifies
Orissa’s Subrat Purohit has qualified to supervise national-level matches after passing the National Referees’ examination, which was conducted by All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Trekking expedition
Youth Hostel Association of India will organise the National Himalayan Trekking Expedition May 14th to 23rd at Chandrakhani pass. Under the leadership of Cuttack district chairman Srikant Nayak an 11-member team comprising Bhabatosh Das, Rajib Das, Amresh Panda, Prabir Mulia, Satyananda Rath, Pradip Kumar Sahoo, Ravi Prasad, Gourab Sahoo and Vijayalaxmi Sahoo started their journey Tuesday. The name of the 11th member of the team will be finalised later.
