Rayagada: Mita Sabar, a 19-year-old orphan girl of Perupanga village under Padmapur block in this district is suffering from an abnormal hand growth that has shattered all her dreams.
Despite repeated pleas with the administration, the poor girl has failed to get any form of support for treatment and is left bed-ridden.
Sources said, the misfortune struck the girl while she was only 13 years old, studying in Class VII. Her right hand started growing abnormally and looked that of an elephant’s leg. The girl had to quit her studies as she could not even walk properly due to the unknown disease.
Adding to her woes, both her father and mother passed away, leaving the whole responsibility of the girl on the shoulders of her elder sister Kumari Sabar. Years have passed to the death of Mita’s parents, but no support has arrived their way.
Kumari has been doing odd jobs to take care of Mita. But she too is now finding it difficult to bear the treatment expenses of Mita. What Kumari gets from working as a daily labourer even fails to give them two square of meal a day.
Despite all hardships, she took Mita to Padmapur Community Health Centre (CHC) and later SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) for treatment. But eventually the poor financial condition forced her to get Mita back to house.
Once an assistance of Rs 10, 000 was sanctioned after she approached the district administration. But that too turned out to be a drop in the ocean. A helpless Kumari now pins her hope on the government to get her sister a normal life
R. Jay Babu, a doctor at Padampur CHC stated that, “A plastic surgery will be conducted on Mita at SCB. The Collector had sanctioned Rs 10, 000 and additional financial aid will be provided if required. The girl can definitely recover from her ailment after the treatment.”
