Kendrapara: She was a brilliant student and was studying Plus II Third Year Science at the Korua LN College. But she was forced to give up studies due to her kidney problem.
Acute poverty prevented her from getting treated, and now she is suffering acute pain due to the kidney ailment.
Debajani Nayak, 20, daughter of physically handicapped labourer Ratan Kumar Nayak of Brahmapur village in Garadapur block, was diagnosed with damage in both kidneys six months ago. The doctor advised kidney transplantation, but that requires around Rs 10 lakh.
“Although my parents are ready to donate a kidney we don’t have the money for that,” said Debajani.
She is going for dialysis twice a week. Ratan has been providing dialysis to his daughter at a private hospital by borrowing money.
Ratan father had a Biju Krushak Kalyan Yojana card, but that did not fetch free treatment for his daughter.
He approached the BDO of Garadapur and the Collector. The Collector sanctioned Rs 10,000 from the District Red Cross Fund.
Debajani’s mother said they did not get any other financial assistance from the district administration.
“Uncertainty looms large over my treatment. It’s impossible to say whether I would survive. My father runs the family by working as a farmhand. So it is difficult to arrange such a huge amount for my treatment,” said Debajani.
Ratan is worried about how to raise money for his daughter’s treatment. He urged the district administration, the health minister and the CM to provide financial assistance or ensure free kidney transplantation. He also requested kind hearted persons to help with his daughter’s treatment.
“My father is handicapped, but he doesn’t have pension. I opened a betel shop by selling my brother’s cycle. I had a dream to help my father by securing a job after studies. But my dreams crashed. If I undergo kidney transplantation I can once again study and achieve my goal. But for that a huge amount is required,” Debajani said.
District social security officer Pravas Chandra Das said he would raise the matter with the Collector and the District Emergency Officer.
