Balasore/Jajpur: Violence against elderly parents saw a new low in the state Monday what with a woman being allegedly hacked to death by his son in Jajpur district while in another case, a 70-year old woman was brutally beaten up by her son at Basta in Balasore over a family tiff. A video of the inhuman assault on the elderly lady in Balasore went viral on the social media leading to a suo motu action against him by the police.
A sexagenarian woman was hacked to death allegedly by her son in Jajpur district over a family dispute. The woman had an altercation with her daughter-in-law who assaulted her and then her son hit her with a sharp weapon.
Her neighbours at Daragha village under Bari police station limits took her to hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead. The accused couple fled the village after the incident.
In the second case, the police arrested Sridhar Barik after a video of the brutal attack on the elderly woman went viral on social media. Based on a complaint lodged by a senior government officer working in Balasore collectorate, the District Collector asked Basta block social welfare officer to probe the matter.
Following the investigation, the police made the arrest, Basta sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Ranjit Kumar Prusty said.
The video footage shows the man beating up his mother mercilessly in front of his house with his hand. He even kicked her and beat her up with a stick despite her repeated pleas to spare her. He is seen in the video dragging the old woman by her hair.
The incident comes in the wake of a woman who was arrested for thrashing her octogenarian mother-in-law in full public view in Bargarh district. The heinous act was recorded by the victim’s granddaughter and circulated on social media after which the police took suo moto action and arrested the accused.
