BHUBANESWAR: Pattachitra painting is one of the ancient and traditional art works popular in Orissa. After a period of some neglect, the art form gained a new significance of late for its grandeur and exquisiteness. Its entry to the fashion world at the initiative of the state’s prominent fashion designers helped it find a new acceptance. In a welcome step forward, fashion designer from Gujarat Sweta Parekh, also known as Dolliz Kasba, has engraved Pattachitra onto her designer clothes. She is taking these to London where they will be on display along with her other collections at a fashion show. Parekh made the announcement at a media briefing in a city hotel Monday. National award-winning Sweta Parekh, known for her Pattachitra style garments with traits of zardozi embroidery, said she aimed to popularize Orissa’s art at events abroad. Her collections will be promoted by Bollywood actress Prachi Desai November 12 at the London Fashion Week. The event is scheduled from November 11 to 14. The designer said, “I have engraved Mayur Pankh (Peacock feather) in designer dresses in a unique way. I am excited to showcase these in the overseas fashion shows. It would, however, not be much attractive if I use Pattachitra on mythology characters.” She has engraved Mayur Pankh over Cinderella gowns and also on sarees, Ghagra Cholis, shirts and sherwanis.
Sweta is a winner of Dada Saheb Phalke Award For Best Designer. She said, “Cinderella gown is a western gown. So I wanted to do an experiment on it. I wanted to show people how traditional art can be engraved on western clothes.” She used the matka silk fabric in designs. “I preferred Matka silk because it is popular in Indian culture and its original colour is beautiful,” she said. International fashion choreographer Lokesh Sharma and social activist Namrata Chadha were present at the media briefing. “It is great news that some artwork from Orissa will be showcased on an international platform. Such steps will help sustain the traditional art,” said Lokesh. Namrata called Sweta an innovator. “She has made some experiments in designs which are hugely laudable,” she said. Rupa Khurana, a professional model and Muskaan wore Sweta’s collections and displayed them at the event.
