Bhubaneswar, June 1: A girl struggles to earn a living and take care of her mother and younger brother after the death of her father. In desperation, she decides to sell herself and places an advertisement to this effect in the newspapers.
This was the storyline of the play Mun Bikiri Hebi staged by the theatre group Ebam Ame that had the audience spellbound on the opening day of the 3rd state-level Natak Mahotsav at Rabindra Mandap here Monday.
The play was written by Bhaskar Jena, choreographed by Asim Basu and directed by Sachi Dasa with the background music being given by Pratap Rout.
Scores of people thronged the venue of the drama festival where four theatre troupes from Bhubaneswar, Jatni and Bargarh will stage plays written by Oriya playwrights that depict different aspects of life.
“For the past three years we have been organising this festival in the city. We started the festival with the motive of promoting Oriya drama among the people of the city,” said Suvakanta Padhi, secretary of the Ebam Ame group, which organised the drama festival.
“Since its inception, it has been a three-day festival. However, this year we are conducting the festival over four days. Every year we include new groups from different parts of the state who prepare special dramas for the event,” said Padhi.
The other dramas that will be staged on the remaining three days include ‘Maunsa’ by Utarayani Club, ‘Bhu-daan’ by the International Theatre of Borpali and ‘Debadasi’ by Satabdi Ra Kalakaar, which the organisers expect will draw a huge audience.
The inaugural day’s programme was attended by mayor Ananta Narayan Jena and the director of culture, Sushil Das.
