Koraput: The police arrested a notorious criminal after a gunfight near Purunagad bypass at Jeypore in Koraput district early Tuesday morning.
The criminal has been identified as Shiva Shankar Panigrahi alias Jitu Kana. He managed to escape following a gunfight with the police August 18.
Acting on a tipoff, a special team of Jeypore police intercepted Jitu and his four associates.
On seeing the cops, the criminals opened fire, but the police retaliated.
In the exchange of fire, Jitu was nabbed, while his associates managed to escape.
A country-made gun, live bullets and empty shells were seized from his possession.
“On seeing us, Jitu Kana fired two rounds on us which hit our Bolero and forced us to retaliate. In the fighting, we nabbed him while others fled the spot. Interrogation is on to get more information regarding the gang and their role in past crimes,” said Jeypore Town Police Station Inspector-in-Charge, Baleshwar Giddhi.
