Dhenkanal: The postmaster of Anantapur branch post office under Bhuban police limits in Dhenkanal district was arrested and court forwarded Saturday for allegedly duping depositors. He was sent to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected by a court.
The accused has been identified as Bijay Kumar Dehury.
According to reports, Bijay was embezzling funds from depositors under the Sukanya Yojana.
The matter came to fore when a local resident found low balance in his savings account after he went to the post office to update his passbook.
Suspecting something foul, he recounted his deposits and realised that he had been duped.
Following a departmental inquiry it was ascertained that around Rs 59,591 belonging to five depositors have been misappropriated.
The accused has been booked under Section 409 of the IPC.
“The accused postmaster misused his power by using government stamp. He spent the cash deposits without mentioning it in official record. He has confessed to his crime,” said a police official.
