Umerkote: A seven-month pregnant, unmarried minor girl was rescued Saturday by the Umerkote Integrated Child Development Project (ICDS) after her family and the accused boy’s kin refused to shelter her.
Police said the 17-year-old girl, a resident of a village under Umerkote police limits, had been surviving by going door to door and eating whatever food villagers provided.
A local Anganwadi worker reported the matter to Umerkote Child Development Project Officer Sanjukta Behera. Supervisor Chandrika Bag, acting on Behera’s instructions, reached the village, where a meeting was held in the presence of the sarpanch and several residents. The supervisor later brought the girl to Umerkote.

As the girl is pregnant, officials immediately produced her online before the Nabarangpur Child Welfare Committee. On the committee’s directive, she was placed at the Sakhi One Stop Centre in Nabarangpur. Authorities said a decision on her long-term rehabilitation has not yet been taken.
