Delang: A Class IX student died of snakebite, and another was critical after the two were bitten while staying overnight at their school following a block-level sports competition in Puri district, according to reports.
The deceased was identified as 14-year-old Sai Swayam Jena, while PK Gyanaranjan Parida is undergoing treatment at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
The incident took place at Kabi Prasanna Pattasani High School in Delang, where a block-level sports competition was held Saturday.
Seven students stayed at the school after the event instead of returning home.
Physical education teacher Suryanarayan Jena also stayed with them. Late at night, Gyanaranjan woke up after being bitten on his hand.
Suryanarayan examined the injury and arranged for him to be taken to Delang Hospital.
After initial treatment, he was shifted to Capital Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
Around 1:30 am, Sai Swayam, Suryanarayan’s son, complained of chest pain and dizziness.
His father examined him and found a bite mark on his ear.
He immediately took Sai Swayam to Capital Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Sai Swayam’s eyes were donated to the eye bank at Capital Hospital, according to the family.
