Balasore: The Allahabad High Court’s December 8 ruling terming ‘triple talaq’ as unconstitutional has evoked both opposition and support among different sects of the minority community across the country.
In Balasore, the Ahmadiyya community has fully endorsed the view of the Allahabad High Court ruling that ‘triple talaq’ is unconstitutional and violates rights of Muslim women. It also said that no personal law board is above the Constitution.
The community members Sunday held a press conference at the Panthnivas here, stating that ‘triple talaq’ is not endorsed by the holy Quran if there are no valid grounds for it.
Briefing reporters, district president of the Ahmmadiyya community, Abdul Odud Khan, said, “The Quran does not concord at all with a person giving triple talaq to his wife under the influence of anger, alcohol or without conscience.”
Dwelling on Islam, Khan said it is a complete religion which accords equal rights to both men and women.
In case there is a difference of opinion among the husband and wife, one can seek separation from the other as per Islamic law, Khan said.
When a man seeks separation, it is called ‘talaq’ while when a woman seeks divorce it is called ‘khula’, he added. He made it clear that the Sharia has provision for talaq if there are valid grounds of hatred for each other and violation of rules in conjugal life due to extramarital affair.
Islam preaches people to maintain peace, harmony and unity before thinking of ‘talaq’, he said.
In many cases, people seeking ‘talaq’ without proper knowledge of the rules and regulations as enshrined in the Quran is nothing but cruelty, he noted.
Religious leaders like Sheikh Hajiruddin and Jamal Shariat among others were present at the press conference. PNN
