Sambalpur: The disciplinary committee of the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) has investigated the alleged ragging of a third year student by his seniors in the institute.
The VSSUT authorities found 12 students involved in the case and directed them to leave the campus. Following this directive, these students have left their campus Friday evening with their guardians.
They have been warned not to be seen at the college, hostels, or campus till any decision is taken on the issue in the next meeting. The VSSUT authorities warned if the direction is violated, the students will be taken to task.
The next meeting of the VSSUT disciplinary committee will be held Tuesday. The incident had taken place Wednesday night when a group of senior students knocked on the door of the complainant’s room.
They asked him to show them his mobile phone. When the victim refused to comply with their demand, the seniors thrashed him. The student’s father lodged a written complaint with the dean of the students’ welfare of the institute.
At that time, Vice-Chancellor Banshidhar Majhi claimed it was a case of a tussle among students, but announced that the disciplinary committee of the university will hold a meeting over the issue.
In the past, the VSSUT has seen several cases of ragging. In August 2019, a video showing seniors ragging around 50 junior students had gone viral.
In the video, senior students were seen tearing the shirts of their juniors, slapping them and forcing them to dance in their undergarments while holding their ears.
The institute had debarred 10 students from appearing for the university examinations for a year and slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 each on 52 others for being involved in the incident.
Ragging is banned in all campuses in the country.
