Konark: Incessant rains, triggered by low pressure, caused widespread water logging on the premises of world famous Sun temple here Wednesday causing resentment among the tourists.
The rainwater created a flood-like situation in the temple premises. Tourists faced considerable inconvenience due to the extensive water-logging and had to return home without enjoying the beauty of the architectural work of the 13th century world-class heritage site.
According to some locals, lack of proper drainage system in the temple premises causes water logging and that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) authorities had done little to prevent the temple from getting inundated.
Sources said that the temple premises went under two-foot-deep water due to the rains, forcing the suspension of the light and sound show.
“The temple premises frequently get waterlogged during rain as the ASI authorities are not taking any permanent measures to drain out water. I have come to the heritage site with my family. But we are returning home without fully enjoying the architectural works because of water accumulation,” said Jay Krushna Barik, a visitor from Cuttack.
Another tourist from Keonjhar, Subash Chandra Das, said, “I came to the temple with my near and dear ones but we could not visit the temple premises due to water logging.”
When contacted, local officer in charge of the Sun temple Nirmal Mohapatra said, “At least 20 pump sets have been engaged to drain out rainwater from the temple premises.”
