Bhubaneswar, August 7: The occasion of Rakhsa Bandhan was celebrated across the city in a cheerful way. Chief Minister of Orissa, Naveen Patnaik Monday greeted people of the state on this holy occasion of Gamha and Rakhi purnima. He conveyed his good wishes, to all brothers and sisters through his Twitter handle. On the occasion, Prerana a social organisation organised a plantation drive at Indira Gandhi Park, where the students and social activists tied rakhi to the tress at the park symbolizing the necessity to protect nature. Dilip Srichandan, Chairman of Prerana said that “As the main theme of Rakhsa Bandhan as the brothers take pledge to protect the sisters by
tying rakhi at their wrist, the tress also provided many things to use and keep us safe from the health hazards and give us fresh air so on the occasion of we decide to tied rakhi to the trees to make people aware about plantation of trees he added, Many social activists like Suchismita Prusty, Pratibha Panda, Sulata Deop were also present on the occasion and
tied their respective rakhi’s to the trees planted in the park. Suchismita Prusty said that “As Raksha bandhan is an auspicious day that defines a strong bond which can never be broken, whatsoever. A simple thread promises to keep intact the love and strong relationship that a brother and sister share. Similarly, the trees also protect us from various hazards and by tying
rakhi we are symbolically creating a bond that should not be broken. Adruta, a Children’s home across many districts in Orissa, also celebrated Raksha Bandhan in a grand style by declaring the day as a birthday for every children living in the orphanage. “We try to give the children something to cheer on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. We organise cultural events to cheer them up and make them feel happy” said Sagarika Mishra, Director of Adruta. The sweet stalls in the city had a soaring business on the occasion. prepared variety of sweets keeping in view of the demands during the Rakhi week. Bikash Das a sweet shop owner said “many shopkeepers and traders have used the festive spirit to their advantage and announced discounts. Bakeries and gift shops have increased their stocks right ahead of the Raksha Bandhan. “We have prepared baskets of flowers and gift hampers full of goodies, chocolates and cookies for the occasion. There are various discounts also on different products such as cakes, pastries and muffins,” said Pravesh Kumar, a prominent baker in the city.
