Bhubaneswar, Nov 5: Rising Students entered the semifinals of the U-16 Umakanta Garabadu Memorial cricket tournament beating Paramount Sporting by seven wickets in the semifinal at the BEM HS Ground here Thursday.
Electing to bat first, Paramount scored 169 for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 35 overs with Farhat Khan (53, 66b) emerging as the highest scorer. B Surya Kumar (2/29) bowled well for Rising Students.
In reply, Rising Students chased down the target with ease in 21.4 overs for the loss of three wickets thanks to a stroke full half century by man of the match Yogesh Gond (68, 50b). He was well-supported by Punit Banerjee (48, 35b).
Orissa enter final
Orissa entered the final of the East Zone Men’s Blind T20 cricket tournament after winning two consecutive matches against Tripura and Bihar at Ranchi, Thursday. This was Orissa’s third win on the trot.
In the first match played Thursday, Orissa prevailed over Tripura by a huge margin of 177 runs. Openers Sukhram Majhi (121 n o) and Pankaj Bhue (104 n o) scored unbeaten centuries to help Orissa notch up a mammoth total of 213 in the stipulated 15 overs. In reply, Tripura were bundled out for a paltry 36. Orissa also dominated the second match beating Bihar by 148 runs.
Hosts struggle
Madhya Pradesh made a very good start against Hosts Orissa as they scored 262 for the loss of five wickets on day one of their four-day match in the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy at the DRIEMS Ground in Cuttack, Thursday.
After being put in, MP batters impressed with their dogged batting as three of their top-order players – Krishna Soni (65, 122b, 13×4), Siddharth Patidar (55, 67b, 11×4) and Arjun Patel (55 batting, 148b, 5×4) hit half centuries. Abhishek Pathak (46, 81b, 7×4, 2×6) and Yash Dubey (34, 107b, 3×4, 1×6) also contributed with the bat.
Karateka feted
As the only participant from Orissa, Payal Baral will take part in the World Karate Championships in Indonesia, November 12-15. HAL Koraput Division authorities wished Payal all the best and felicitated her in her residence at Sunabeda, Thursday. “Payal will train under a foreign coach for five days and then will depart for Indonesia,” informed Utkal Karate School secretary Hari Prasad Patnaik.
