Bhubaneswar: Water in River Daya has been getting polluted as six proposed sewage treatment projects in and around the vicinity of Bhubaneswar have faltered amid administrative impasse.

Sewage and drain water mingle with the river water every day, thereby gradually making it intoxicated and unusable as well. According to a private source, used water from over 11 lakh households of the city are being allowed directly to mingle with the river water.
Apart from Daya, the Gangua and Kuakhai rivers have also been facing serious pollution threat for nearly ten years, sans sewage treatment plant and waste water purification project here. Around 300 tonnes of industrial waste released from over 90 units in Mancheswar as well as Rasulgarh industrial estate mingle with Daya water passing through Gangua.
The six sewage treatment plant (STP) projects were proposed with an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore but have been left midway.
Water Corporation of Odisha has been looking after the construction work of the six STP projects. The engineering cell of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has only been assisting in technical aspects of the projects. Construction work of a mega STP project is underway at Basuaghai which would help treat municipal wastes after completion, said a Deputy Commissioner of the civic body.
