Sambalpur: At least 10 people died Monday, while four others were critically injured when a speeding lorry going from Sambalpur city rammed a Maximo van carrying 14 people including the driver on board at Bhavanipali, 20km from here, under Jujumura police station.
The mishap happened at around 2 pm when the fully loaded 12-wheel lorry (OD-05 AA 3827) was on its way to Cuttack. It had a head-on collision with the Maximo van (OD-15 E 2830) coming from the opposite direction at Bhavanipali. Such was the impact of the collision that the van was badly mangled with the victims caught inside it.
Seven people died on the spot, while three others died on their way to the district headquarterhospital here. The deceased included seven women, including a two-year old girl.
The deceased include Saraswati Badhei, her husband Damodar Badhei, Nimei Badhei, Satyabhama Nath, Chanchala Nath, her two-year old daughter Anasuya Nath, Jashobanti Badhei, Jamuna Nath, Dulana Nath and driver Yogeshwar Behera. Most of the deceased belonged to one family and were returning to their village Parmanpur under Sasan police station in Maneswar block of the district after visiting nearby Kalpeshwar Shiva temple.
