Keonjhar, Jan 15: The condition of a pregnant tribal woman worsened at the district headquarters hospital Thursday after she delivered a baby after operation. Worse, the doctors, Asha workers and medical staff have allegedly taken Rs 2,750 from the poor woman for the surgery.
The matter came to light after Hrushikesh Munda, the husband of the woman, drew the attention of the chief district medical officer Dr Basudev Patra. Meanwhile, the CDMO asked the additional district medical officer Dr Bijay Kumar Behera to look into the matter.
Malli Munda (22) of Nuagan near Bhagamunda under Harichandanpur block was admitted to the hospital Sunday for her delivery. In the evening, she was operated upon and delivered a baby. In return, an Asha worker took away Rs 2750 from Munda, saying that she would pay it to the doctor and other medical staff.
The incident is a far cry from the slogan of free healthcare to expectant mothers as allowed under Janani Surakhya Yojna.
On the other hand, the condition of the patients is reportedly growing critical. Though Hrushikesh sought consultation of the concerned doctor, the latter assured that the patients will recuperate gradually.
Following instruction from the CDMO, the ADMO called Asha worker Sakuntala Mohant for interrogation about why she took illegal gratification from the patient.
Action will be taken against the guilty after the probe is over, the ADMO said. However, locals have alleged similar wrongdoings by the medical staff. They have demanded a high level probe into such illegalities.
