Bhubaneswar, Jan 29: Aiming to address the issue of increasing road accidents and to inculcate a sense of road discipline among schoolchildren, the Sankha Dhwani Rasta Surakhya Samiti has embarked upon an initiative to form Road Safety Clubs in educational institutions in the city.
The Buxi Jagabandhu English Medium School has been chosen as the first school in the city to have a road safety club. Principal of the school JK Mohanty and Samiti president Kulamani Deo signed an MoU at the school premises Thursday.
According to the MoU, the club will organise road safety programmes at the school throughout the year. “Nearly 10,000 road accidents are taking place in the state, in which 4,000 people lose their lives every year. The most vulnerable are the youth. Therefore, such clubs will serve as a medium to spread awareness among all. If the students are made aware of road discipline, we can help bring down the number of road accidents in the future. Students would help spread awareness on road safety among their families and friends,” said Deo.
Students who will be part of the club will be selected by the school management. The students are an excited lot and are looking forward to be a part of road safety awareness programmes. “We are proud to have the first club among all schools in the city. We will learn road safety discipline and will be glad to teach others,” said Pratima Das, a student.
The samiti will provide funding for the club. “I’m grateful to the education department for including road safety in the school syllabus. The sensitisation programmes by the state government will be helpful for the children as well for the state,” said Mohanty.
On the occasion, a road safety signage board was dedicated by the samiti for schoolchildren.
