Bhubaneswar, Feb 2: Rourkela-based SAIL Hockey Academy (SHA) emerged champions Wednesday of the VIIIth Vinod Khandekar U-21 All India Gold Cup hockey tournament beating Railway Hockey Academy, Maharashtra 5-2 in the final at Jhansi.
Earlier in the league matches SHA maintained an all-win record defeating Bhopal Hockey XI 7-0, Sports Authority of India (SAI) 11-0 and Lucknow Sports Hostel 5-3. In the semifinal they beat Tamil Nadu 5-2.
Gangpur held
Hockey Gangpur hadn’t had the best of the starts as they were held 2-2 against Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy in their opening match of the VIIIth Senior Women’s National Championship (Division-A) at Ranchi, Thursday. Rojita Kujur (21st) and Rinki Kujur (26th) sounded the board for Gangpur while MP Hockey Academy scored in 14th and 39th minute.
Punga bags gold
Punga Soren secured the first gold medal for Orissa clocking 14.12 seconds in the boys’ 110 metres hurdle event of the inaugural edition of Khelo India School Games at New Delhi, Friday.
Aditya Prakash of Jharkhand took silver with a timing of 14.30 seconds while G Nishanthraja of Tamil Nadu (14.57s) bagged bronze. In girls’ long jump event, Manisha Merel of Orissa missed out on a medal by a whisker finishing fourth.
In a separate development, Sradhamayee Rout, physical education teacher of Tarajangha High School, Jagatsinghpur was selected as a technical official of the Khelo India School Games. She departed for New Delhi Friday.
