Bhubaneswar: Samsad Ara Begum of Cuttack put up a spectacular show creating a state and meet record each in the women’s 5000 metres and another meet record in the women’s 10000 metre categories on the final day of the 65th State Athletic Meet here at the Kalinga Stadium, Saturday.
In the 5000m, she clocked 18:14.9 seconds eclipsing the previous best of 18:18.2 seconds. She also broke the 19-year-old state record in the 10000 metres where she finished with a timing of 34:09.7 seconds while the previous best was 38:10.9 seconds.
However, Cuttack emerged champions with a total of 641 points while Sundergarh finished runners-up with 361 points. Samsad was also adjudged Best Women Athlete for her brilliant display during the meet while the Best Men Athlete award went to Punga Soren of Cuttack.
