Kalinganagar, Feb 17: Tension prevailed at Military Square here in Jajpur district after a 13-year-old schoolgirl was killed in a road mishap Tuesday.
The victim was identified as Sukuri Mistry, daughter of Sashadev Mistry of Bengapatia village under Jajpur Road police limits in the district and a student of class-VIII of Managobindpur School in the region.
The mishap occurred after a trailer truck hit her bicycle from rear at Military Square when she was on her way to Dhabalagiri to witness Shivaratri festival. Locals rushed her in an unconscious condition to Danagadi health centre where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The mishap triggered widespread tension in the area as residents brought the body back from the health centre and put it up at the mishap site to stage a road
blockade by burning tyres.
They demanded compensation for the bereaved family and streamlining of the traffic system which they alleged has turned out to be the main reason behind regular occurrence of mishaps at the site. The road blockade threw traffic out of gear as hundreds of vehicles were left stranded on both sides of the road.
Police rushed to the spot and tried to placate the agitating villagers, but they refused to listen and insisted on fulfillment of their demands. Police seized the vehicle and detained the driver. They relented after Jajpur Road IIC Rajiv Lochan Panda, Danagadi OIC Madhusmita Mohanty held discussions with the agitators and announced `10,000 from the
district Red-Cross fund, `2000 under Harish Chandra Yojana and a house under government scheme to the
bereaved family.
