Semiliguda: Politicians have never shied away from making big promises during election campaigns, but the promises disappear after polls. This is creating problems for the villagers of Renga panchayat in Semiluguda block of Koraput district.
Sources said a road in Renga panchayat connects to the main road in Semiluguda block. People of six villages depend on this road. But the 5,000 people using this hilly road have a bumpy ride every day as it is filled with potholes. Travelling on this road is dangerous, said locals.
They said they have been requesting the administration and the government for years to construct a new road, but it was in vain.
Due to this problem, people of the six villages in Renga panchayat had decided to boycott the 2019 elections. But the MLA of Pottangi had assured the villagers that his party would definitely construct the road if it comes to power.
The villagers said that they had voted for the BJD after the MLA’s assurance. He won the election and his party, the BJD, came to power. But the road has not been constructed.
Locals said travel becomes difficult during the monsoon. Villagers find it impossible even to use cycles. For medical emergencies the villagers have to use a road 15 km away from Semiluguda headquarters hospital. The villagers are facing problems in taking pregnant women to hospital.
There is another road between Renga panchayat and Maligunja. But this road is under construction for years. The contractor abandoned work mid-way and the road is now unusable. The villagers urged the administration to build both the roads soon.
