Baripada: The wait is over for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts as the world-famous Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj district reopened Sunday for the 2026 27 tourism season following its annual monsoon closure.
Tourists showed considerable enthusiasm on the opening day, eager to explore the reserve’s lush forests, picturesque waterfalls and rich wildlife, particularly its rare black tigers. To ensure tourist convenience and wildlife protection, the authorities have restricted daily entry to 60 four-wheelers.
Of these, 35 vehicles will be allowed through the Kaliami gate at Jashipur and 25 through the Pithabata (Lulung) gate on the Baripada side. Only private vehicles with a minimum ground clearance of 180 mm will be permitted.
Entry through Pithabata will be allowed between 8 am and 9 am, while vehicles entering through Jashipur must report between 5 am and 9 am. Heavy vehicles, including buses and trucks, are prohibited. All visitors must exit the reserve by 6 pm, while tourists visiting Joranda and Barehipani waterfalls must return by 4 pm.
Night-time movement is strictly prohibited. Entry permits must be booked in advance through www.similipal.org. Visitors must produce valid identity proof, submit a written undertaking to follow the rules and be accompanied by a trained guide. Vehicles, visitors and luggage will be checked at entry and exit points.
Violations may invite legal action. Overnight accommodation is available at eco-tourism cottages in Kumari, Gudgudia, Talabandha, Barehipani and Jamuani, with bookings through www. ecotourodisha.com.
In a bid to protect wildlife, mobile phone use has been restricted in the core area. Only DSLR, bridge and mirrorless cameras will be permitted for photography. Restrictions on plastic waste and noise pollution will also remain in force.
A new ‘Similipal Cafe’ near the entrance gate will offer local cuisine and other facilities to visitors.
