Bhubaneswar, Feb 11: Consumption of alcohol has ruined our society, said members of the Milita Orissa Nisha Nibaran Abhiyan Wednesday who organised a sit-in at Lower PMG in the city to protest against the sale of liquor in the capital.
The demonstrators also advocated a complete ban on the sale of alcohol in the state, a demand that the organisation has been making for the last four years. They also supported Biju Janata Dal MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain’s move to present in the Assembly on Wednesday the Orissa Prohibition Bill 2014 that seeks to ban the sale of alcohol in the state.
The demonstrators raised slogans against the consumption and sale of liquor in the state. Several social workers and activists took part in the demonstration in support of the initiative, with members of several organizations expressing their views on the occasion.
“The widespread consumption of alcohol in society has ruined out culture. Many families have been destroyed because of this,” said Padma Chandra Nayak, the convener of the organisation.
“We demand that the state government take appropriate steps to ban the sale of alcohol in the state. We should learn from Gujarat, which banned liquor and prospered. We support the Orissa Prohibition Bill,” said Nayak.
“We whole-heartedly support the Orissa Prohibition Bill, which is slated to be discussed in the Assembly. Earlier also attempts have been made to ban liquor in the state but these were futile. Now we want that our demands are met. This will help people to live happily. Liquor has only spread negativity in society,” said Madhumita Samal, the media in-charge of the organisation.
