Six nabbed for hatching robbery plot

Rourkela: Rourkela police have arrested six men for allegedly planning a robbery behind the Congress office in Sector-21 under Plant Site police limits late Monday night. Several weapons, including iron rods, sticks, and knives, were seized from the suspects, police said.

The arrested have been identified as Asaraf Ansari, 26, of Rawani Chowk and Deepak Mahto, 31, of Sindhipada in Rajgangpur, Karma Guala, 38, of Bishra block, Ashutosh Rath, 25, of Timber Colony, Shekhar Mukhi, 20, of Railway Colony, and Langtu Yadav, 24, of Gopabandhupali.

Police records reveal that most of the accused have criminal antecedents: Asaraf has seven cases registered against him, Deepak has five, Karma has two, Ashutosh has seven, Shekhar has four, and Langtu has four in different police stations.

Police said the suspects had gathered behind the Congress Bhawan to plan robberies at local homes, shops, petrol pumps, and other locations.

Acting on the tip-off, officers arrested the six men and lodged case (790/25). They were produced in court Tuesday at 4pm following legal procedures.

“This swift action prevented a potential spate of robberies in the area,” said a police official, requesting anonymity. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether the accused had accomplices or further plans.
