Puri: Hundreds of residents of Janamangal slum at Baliapanda Bijaynagar Tuesday held a demonstration in front of the District Collector’s office here seeking land deeds.
The agitators submitted a memorandum to Collector Jyotiprakash Das and urged the latter to take steps to provide land deeds to them within 15 days. They have threatened to intensify their agitation if the administration fails to fulfil their demand within the time period.
In their memorandum, the slum dwellers have claimed that they have been residing in the slum for 35 years. However, they have been deprived of enjoying their rights under the Odisha Land Rights to Slum Dwellers Rules-2017 of the state government.
In the absence of land deeds, the residents of Janamangal slum have been facing problems to get various certificates from the Tehsil office, said the memorandum.
According to the memorandum, the slum dwellers had raised the issue with the district administration April 9, last year.
Subsequently, the district administration had undertaken a survey to identify the residents of Janamangal slum. But, the administration is yet to take any step to provide land deeds to the slum dwellers, claimed the memorandum.
