Bhubaneswar: As temperature is on the rise at several parts of Odisha, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena Wednesday afternoon issued an advisory on precautionary measures and preparedness to effectively tackle the approaching ‘heat wave’.
The SRC wrote to all District Collectors in the state saying that, “Heat Wave Action Plan’ has been developed by Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) delineating the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for different departments, district administrations and others to mitigate the heat wave situations.”

“Since the summer season is fast approaching, I would request you to take immediate steps to put in place all preparedness and precautionary measures at different levels in your district to meet the possible heat wave situations,” the SRC’s letter added.
Jena also directed the senior officials to focus on conducting public awareness campaigns in this regard saying that water scarcity be addressed with immediate effect by the district administrations.
List of measures to be undertaken:
‘Paniya Jala Seva Kendras’ (drinking water kiosks) are required to be opened by urban local bodies and panchayats at public places.
Construction and repair of shallow vats are to be ensured for livestock.
Class timings of schools, colleges, other academic and technical institutions must be rescheduled to morning hours.
Special arrangements must be made and separate wards and beds earmarked for treatment of heat stroke patients in hospitals.
The ESI dispensaries must be directed to treat the general public.
Timing for engagement of labourers, daily wagers at sites must be rescheduled. No work should be executed in peak hours during heat wave period.
Power distribution companies (DISCOMs) in the state are to be instructed to maintain uninterrupted electric supply during summer season.
