New Delhi: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has finally issued letters of permission to hike by 33 the number of postgraduate (PG) seats in select government medical colleges of Orissa.
While allowing PG seat hike in chosen medical colleges across the country, the ministry has picked Orissa’s MKCG Medical College (Berhampur) and Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR). Now, these two institutions are all set to see increase in the number of PG seats in different disciplines from this year.
The ministry has cited amendments in the teacher-student ratio behind revising the number of PG seats to meet the increasing demand for more qualified doctors. This move is followed by the recommendations of the Medical Council of India (MCI), which inspected and proposed increasing PG seats in some of the medical colleges in the country.
Between the two Orissa institutions, the Berhampur-based government medical college is set to benefit the most from the move as 28 PG seats are going to be added to four of its disciplines — General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology and Anaesthesia. The remaining five seats will be added to the Burla-based medical college’s anaesthesia branch.
Elaborating on the move, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda said, “An all-time record number of over 4,000 PG medical seats have been approved by the Government of India in various medical colleges and hospitals for the academic session 2017-18, taking the total number of PG seats available to 35,117.”
Looking at the need to increase PG seats in clinical subjects, the government had decided to amend the teacher-student ratio in government medical colleges. This change alone has resulted in the creation of 1,137 extra seats in 71 colleges, he said.
“Many others out of the total of 212 government colleges are sending their proposals and it is expected that at least 1,000 more seats can be added during the month of March 2017,” Nadda added.
