Bhubaneswar: Taking a lesson from the SUM Hospital fire mishap, the works and energy departments have started audit of electrical installations and fire safety measures in all the government run hospitals.
A day after the devastating fire incident in SUM Hospital where 26 persons perished, Chief Secretary AP Padhi October 18 had asked the officials to expedite verification of safety measures in all hospitals to prevent recurrence of such tragedies. Padhi had asked the officials to complete the audit in two months.
“The audit started from October 24. In the first phase, three medical colleges and hospitals at Berhampur, Cuttack and Burla, Sishu Bhawan, Capital Hospital and Achrya Harihar Regional Cancer Institute are being audited on electricity installation front and immediate remedial measures are being taken,” works secretary Nalini Kanta Pradhan said here Thursday. In second phase, audit of district headquarters hospitals (DHHs), primary health centres (PHCs) and community health centres (CHCs) will be done, he said.
The third party audit is being carried out by electrical inspectors of energy department while General Electrical Davison (GED) engineers are taking corrective measures, he pointed out. “We have observed that maximum fire incidents occur due to defunct electricity appliances. That is why we have decided to conduct an audit of electric installations so a that major part will be complied with and it will also minimise fire mishaps,” Pradhan said.
A full-fledged calendar to take up time bound audit and remedial measures has been prepared and WhatsApp group has also been formed for sharing the latest information on the work.
Funds will be no constraints as the state government has already given a green signal, sources said.
Meanwhile, tourism department has also take up steps to strengthen fire fighting measures in all the Pantha Niwas, Panthasala and Panthikas.
Sources stated the director tourism and managing director of Orissa Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) have been instructed to take adequate fire fighting measures in these properties.
