Bhubaneswar: Sushila Devi auditorium of Sai International School here Friday had an enchanting ambiance when eminent Sarangi exponent Ustad Sabir Khan played wonders with his customised musical instrument. He was ably accompanied by tablist Aadil Khan.
The Sarangi player briefed the students about the history and origin of the 41-stringed instrument, various ragas and how songs are composed on the basis of a single raga. He also spoke about some of the popular Hindi movie songs which originated from ragas like Bhairab, Megh, Ahir Bhairav, to name only a few. He ended the hour-long performance with his all-time favourite ‘Raghupati Raghav Rajaram’.
Ustad Khan, son of legendary Sarangi player and vocalist Padma Bhushan Ustad Sultan Khan, is the 9th generation of the Sikar Gharana of music. He has received several accolades including Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar and Sangeet Natak Akademi Yuva Puraskar.
The event was introduced by The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY).
Ustad Sabir Khan will also participate in the Yamini-2018 overnight concert organised by SPIC MACAY Odisha Chapter October 27. Apart from Khan, Ghatam artiste Vidwan Vikku Vinayakam, Sitar artiste Purbayan Chatterjee, Hindustani vocalists Vidhushi Ashwini Bhide Deshpande and Ustad Raja Miyan will also enthrall the audience at the classical concert on Institute of Physics premises here.
Yamini is an overnight event which aims at spreading the bliss of Indian classical music and dance. This event features five renowned artistes and will be packed with performances from all major genres of music – Hindustani and Carnatic, both vocal and instrumental, apart from a traditional dance form.
