Kataka: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed educational institutions across the state to comply with Supreme Court guidelines on preventing student suicides and ensure adequate mental health and safety measures.
The direction came while hearing a petition filed by Brundaban Das Azad, who sought steps to address the reported rise in suicidal tendencies among students due to academic and mental stress. The petition highlighted academic competition, examination pressure, parental and societal expectations and the pressure to fulfil aspirations as factors contributing to mental stress among students. It sought directions for educational institutions to appoint counsellors, provide mental health training and strengthen safety measures. Taking note of the petition, the OHRC directed the Secretary of the Higher Education Department and heads of various educational institutions, including universities in Odisha, to take appropriate measures in accordance with the Supreme Court guidelines.
The commission also directed institutions to appoint counsellors, conduct mental health awareness programmes and provide necessary training and safety measures for students. Besides, the OHRC sought a report from the state government on measures being taken to address the issue. It directed the Health Secretary to submit the report within three months. The Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department and the Director of Health Services, Odisha, have also been directed to extend necessary support to the institutions in implementing the measures.
