Bhubaneswar, May 13: Young sprinter Sukhi Baskey from Orissa made the state proud by qualifying for the ‘National Finals 2016’ of the ‘GAIL Indian Speedstar’ contest in the U-14 segment of both the 100m and 200m at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, Thursday.
Sukhi hails from Sundargarh and has been a resident of the sports hostel there since the last three years. Earlier she had won a silver medal in the 200 metres of the National School Games.
Orissa triumph
Orissa emerged champions in the East Zone visually-impaired cricket tournament after thrashing West Bengal in the final by 10 wickets at New Delhi, Friday.
Opting to bat first, West Bengal mustered 146 for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. In reply Orissa made a mockery of the run chase by overhauling the total in only 12 overs without losing any wicket.
Two selected
Ayushi Mallick and Pragati Roy of Orissa have been selected by Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) to train abroad. Both the players will train in different FIBA Academies. “It’s good news for the state basketball players. It will inspire them to take the game seriously,” stated SAI, Cuttack basketball coach SS Rayudu.
Football tourney
Football Association of Orissa (FAO) and the state department of sports and youth affairs will jointly organise the All India Kalinga Cup football tournament at the Barabati Stadium here, starting May 15.
